This Thomas Worthington High School girls volleyball team had its season end Wednesday, falling to Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 25-9, 25-13, 25-14 in a Division I regional final at Hilliard Davidson.
The Cardinals, who were playing in their first regional semifinal in four seasons, appeared to give in to the magnitude of the match and the caliber of its opponent, a perennial regional qualifier, coach Ed Marsman said.
"(Mount Notre Dame is) a good team and we made them look a little better," said Marsman, whose team finished 20-7. "Our passing wasn't up to snuff today. First regional semifinal, I think we came out a little intimidated. I don't think we played our normal game."
Mount Notre Dame, which was ranked sixth in the in the final state poll behind top-ranked Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, reached a double-digit lead early in the three games, clicking in both the offensive and defensive phases.
"All week we've been working on our defense and trying to execute fully and I think we did that today," said Mount Notre Dame coach Joe Burke, whose team improved to 21-5. "It seemed like we were in system all match and obviously that helped us in our execution."
Mount Notre Dame advanced to play at 2 p.m. Saturday in a regional final against Dublin Coffman, which defeated Pickerington North 25-12, 25-22, 25-9 in the other regional semifinal at Davidson.
Mount Notre Dame won a state championship in 2006. Last year the Cougars fell to eventual state champion Ursuline Academy in a state semifinal and the year before that they fell to Cincinnati Mother of Mercy in the state final.
