The Dublin Coffman High School girls volleyball team remained undefeated in beating Pickerington North 25-12, 25-22, 25-9 in a regional semifinal Wednesday at Hilliard Davidson.
North threatened in the second game as it erased a 9-2 deficit to eventually take an 18-17 lead. Coffman called a timeout and then won seven of the next 12 points.
"I'm glad that we stayed in the game mentally," said Coffman outside hitter Andrea Baylin, whose team improved to 27-0. "In that next game, it was kind of a wakeup call and we came out stronger and were able to get that lead."
Coffman led by as much as 22-6 in the third game. With a roster that has five players taller than 6-foot, size was a factor in the game, said Pickerington North coach Kris Kern, whose team finished 23-4.
"We can't grow in the span of an hour-and-a-half," Kern said. "I thought the second game we played magnificently. We got into our game plan.
"As big as they are, we had to be athletic and we had to make their middle blocker move and so we moved our hitters outside and got (Jordan Householder) some one-on-one stuff and she was as good as anyone in the game."
Coffman advanced to play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davidson in a regional final against Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame, which defeated Thomas Worthington 25-9, 25-13, 25-14 in the other regional semifinal played at Davidson to improve to 21-5.
For Coffman, which was ranked second in the final state poll to Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, had fallen in its previous two regional semifinals.
"I think that we are definitely playing at our highest level right now.," Baylin said. "Our blocking is doing well our defense is playing well. We're playing at the level we want to play at right now and we have to play at this level if we want to compete with the Cincinnati teams so I think we're happy going into Saturday."
