Elementary schools moving to 'ProgressBook'

Nov 05, 2009

Dublin elementary schools will follow middle and high schools onto ProgressBook this year. Dublin middle and high schools made the transition onto the online program last year. It allows parents to monitor their child's grades and communicate with teachers.

According to the district, ProgressBook "is a system that provides a comprehensive approach for monitoring student progress by combining a grade book, progress reports, special services and parent/student/teacher communication into a single Web-based software solution."

District spokesman Doug Baker said reception for the online tool among high and middle school parents was good.

"Everything I've heard has been positive so far," he said. "Parents have a chance to not only see their kids' grades, but it's a nice two-way communication with teachers. That is their grade book."

Parents of elementary students will first see the change next month with a new format on progress reports.

"I would characterize the changes as cosmetic," Baker said. "It communicates the same information, but it will look a little different."

Parents will see a change in progress reports next month, but will not be able to go onto ProgressBook until next year.

"Right now we're in the transition," Baker said. "Teachers are learning the system. Parental access will start in March."

In March, parents will be given online access and a password.
